Jelly Crystal – Yaki-Da
oktober 16 @ 20:00 – 23:30
Stockholm based Filip Johnson began making bedroom recordings, inspired by rock and pop classics from the late 70’s. Raw songs to capture the hallucinogenic hazy feel of everyday life combined with a romantic allure of late nights. Born and raised in Gothenburg, his skills on the bass guitar got him noticed in Stockholm, where he moved to, to play in the bands Vacation Forever and HOLY. Along with these collaborative projects, he started releasing tracks as Jelly Crystal (“I named it after the disgusting jelly cake”). In contrast to that dreaded concoction, his music goes down smoothly with its timeless melodies in dreamy soundscapes. A solo project that allows him to experiment with his music – best described as suggestive glam pop. Making his debut in 2017 with a self-titled EP, we got introduced to an artist whose audio-visual expression is epic in scale and authentic, often with a grandly cinematic sound. At that time people experienced Jelly Crystal as their well-kept secret that no one else had discovered yet, while Johnson described it as (“Imagine an acid-fueled ABBA writing and performing the soundtrack to Titanic”). 2018’s single “Now Awake” with Scott Walker and David Bowie as influences, Johnson revels in the kind of high-drama, high-art solo star role those musicians made their names with. Fully loaded, nostalgic and elegant old-school pop. In many ways, what’s significant with Jelly Crystal today.Since his debut, Johnson has kept releasing a stream of hypnotic music, where each new release has its own character. Taking us back in time as much as it’s futuristic and different from most artists in this non decided micro-genre. In 2021, Jelly Crystal is ready to release his debut album Freak Show, a loosely shaped concept album gravitating around his alter-ego, Jerry. It’s both a twisted and alluring vaudeville, including guest appearances from some of the most exciting new creatives on the Stockholm music scene right now. Esther, Stella Explorer and Kamohelo (Off The Meds), all lend their distinctive flair to one song each on the album. Even though he’s got one foot in the timeless melodies of pop history, Jelly Crystal never hesitates to dash head-first into yet uncharted territories. Happy go lucky by nature, Johnson might come off as carefree at first glance, but underlying Johnson’s charismatic crooning, there’s the strokes of sadness of someone who knows he’ll never fully fit in. Freak Show is the left-field glam rock of a street entertainer on the Sunset strip, singing his heart out for nickels and dimes. It’s the music of the worn-out organ grinder on Yellow brick road, and the music of a wide-eyed kid in wonderland. Innocence and decadence are never far from each other on Freak Show, and even though it’s ceaselessly exhilarating, you’re never left with the feeling that the rollercoaster will ever derail.See you this saturday!
