I wrote Tobacco and tears based off of mine and my best friend’s toxic relationships. We’d always say “tobacco and tears” as a meme quote out loud to each other every time we’d do something stupid for someone we loved endlessly but who was essentially only draining us of our energy/happiness (and bank accounts lol.) It’s so crazy how sometimes you fall so in love with someone that it’s hard to remember how your life was without them. And when that relationship falls through but they still want to be “friends” and you have to witness them with a new girlfriend every 2 weeks, faking a smile gets so much harder, but sometimes you care so much (who knows why lol) and you also have too much pride to admit it’s not going to end well . I don’t smoke cigarettes that much but the horrible guy mistreating my friend always had them in his car so when he’d be flirting with other girls in front of her she would smoke them to no end.
The song came about one night when I was drinking a nice bottle of wine, feeling happy and in a healthy relationship with someone who loved me. I was just looking back in retrospect on all the toxic things that my friend and I let ourselves go though. Very specific content too lol. Something about bottled up embarrassing, painful experiences, wine, and overthinking creates the perfect creative mood. The hook just came out as a freestyle when I was messing around on the guitar, and my brother was sitting across the table from me and was also doing freestyles and somehow we came out with a song! I think it’s important to find light in situations that hurt you the most and remembering that one positive force is the ability to create something you love out of it. Music seriously can take the hardest moments of life and make them feel amazing (as long as the songs a bop lol).
